Distinguished and Famous people from Holdfast Bay
✈️ Jimmy Melrose
Aviator Jimmy Melrose grew up with his mother on the Glenelg Esplanade. His brief flying career brought national attention through long-distance journeys, including a solo flight around Australia and participation in the 1934 MacRobertson air race. He died in an air crash in 1936, aged 22. Holdfast Bay commemorates him through a park, road, interpretation and museum material. Those memorials trace a real childhood connection with the coast, before the flights that made him a widely followed young aviation figure.
🏛️ Hugh Hudson
Hugh Hudson entered South Australia’s parliament by winning Glenelg in 1965, defeating the long-serving education minister Baden Pattinson. He later represented the new seat of Brighton and served as education minister from 1970 to 1975. An economist who had lectured at the University of Adelaide, he helped reshape the State’s education administration and later held energy and planning portfolios. He became deputy premier in 1979 but lost his seat when the government was defeated that September. His biographer recalled visitors finding him reading a novel with his feet on the desk: he said he had finished his paperwork and was waiting for more.
